Posted on May 3, 2023May 3, 2023 By admin

It’s hump day. I open a new bag of an experimental blend of light Ethiopian and Peruvian beans from Food Forrest Farms. I chat about movie night, a cemetry bust and I got some great news last night. We lead off with The Perfect Cup Question “WHAT’S THE MOST SENSIBLE THING YOU’VE EVER HEARD SOMEONE SAY?” and follow that with This Day In History prepared by Ryan over at Ducktioncups.com

This Day In History

If you enjoy the history segment every day give some love to Ducktioncups.com

Good morning and Happy Wednesday, humans.
Today is May the 3rd, and it’s the 123rd day of 2023.

History nugs coming your way…

752 – Mayan king Bird Jaguar IV of Yaxchilan in modern-day Chiapas, Mexico, assumes the throne.

He ruled from 752 until 768 AD, continuing the period of prosperity started by his father Itzamnaaj Bʼahlam III.
He had to struggle to take and hold power, as he was not perceived to be the rightful heir to the throne.

1715 – A total solar eclipse is visible across northern Europe and northern Asia,
as predicted by Edmond Halley to within four minutes accuracy.

1802 – Washington, D.C. is incorporated as a city after Congress abolishes the Board of Commissioners,
the District’s founding government. The “City of Washington” is given a mayor-council form of government.

1901 – The Great Fire of 1901 begins in Jacksonville, Florida.
A prolonged drought in a city with wooden buildings with wood shingled roofs.
Sparks from a chimney started a fire in a pile of spanish moss that had been laid out to dry.

In 8 hours, the fire burned 146 city blocks, destroyed more than 2,368 buildings,
and left almost 10,000 residents homeless.

1957 – Walter O’Malley, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, agrees to move the team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles.

2000 – The sport of geocaching begins, with the first cache placed and the coordinates from a GPS posted on Usenet.

Pip’s notes- does anyone actually Geocache?
It’s been discussed to hide a few Duction Cups with Geocaching, but I find it odd…
Then again, this coming from a dude who did orienteering with a map, compass & protractor. Once.

Happy Birthdays –

1695 – Henri Pitot, French physicist and engineer, invented the Pitot tube

The Pitot tube is used to determine the airspeed of aircraft; the water speed of boats;
and the flow velocity of liquids, air, and gases in industry.

Pip’s notes- Yeah, they had math problems with letters and characters on the wiki page for Pitot tube.
It takes me extra time to calculate my fuel mileage. (excuse me while I pull out my crayons)

1940 – David Koch, American businessman, chemical engineer, and philanthropist.

Koch ran as Vice Pres. of the US in the 1980 election as a libertarian.
Founded Citizens for a Sound Economy, and ranked the 11th richest person in the world in 2019

1977 – Eric Church, American country music singer-songwriter

Pip’s notes- now we can do country music. It’s not Monday.

Five-dollar handle bonus name-

1783 – José de la Riva Agüero – Peruvian soldier and politician,
1st President of Peru and 2nd President of North Peru (d. 1858)

Pip’s notes- How did it go from Peru to North Peru…
I’m thinking he wasn’t the best President? Dunno.. anyway

Passings-

2004 – Darrell Johnson, American baseball player, coach, and manager (b. 1928)

Holidays –

International Sun day.
In 1978, US President Jimmy Carter designated today to devote for solar power.

World Press Freedom Day, or just ‘World Press Day’ was set up by the United Nations General Assembly
