If you enjoy the history segament and all the links be sure to visit, share, message or purchase over at Ducktioncups.com V4V folks.
Be Sure to Read More on The First Story
Cheers, humans & happy Camel day. Here’s a few things for LOTS of history
note- there will NOT be a test on this at the end of the semester.
- 1527 – Pánfilo de Narváez departs Spain to explore Florida with 600 men – by 1536, only 4 have survived.
In 1520 he was sent to Mexico tasked to stop the invasion by Hernán Cortés.
Even though his 900 men outmanned those of Cortés 3 to 1, Narváez was outmaneuvered,
lost an eye and captured….
A few years later, returning to Spain, King Carlos V sent him to explore and colonize Florida.
600, including men from Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Italy. Shipwrecks, plague, attacks, stubbed toes, drowning…
Pip’s notes- I’m not trying to push anyone to check out the show notes on LOTS website, but check the link out
in the story notes and check this “expedition”.. This should be a movie or something. legit 3-part movie story.
Side notes- I’d like to think this is where a “Florida-Man” backstory could start.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1nfilo_de_Narv%C3%A1ez
- 1673 – Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette begin exploring the Mississippi River.
On May 17, 1673, Jolliet and Marquette departed from St. Ignace, MI,
with two canoes and five other voyagers. The group sailed to Green Bay.
he Jolliet-Marquette expedition paddled along the west bank of
the Mississippi until mid-July.
When they passed the mouth of the Arkansas River,
they became satisfied that they had established that the
Mississippi flowed into the Gulf of Mexico
Marquette, a French Jesuit missionary who founded 2 of the first settlements
in Michigan from Europe.
Side note- as preliminary to further work, devoted himself to the study
of the local languages and became fluent in six different dialects.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Marquette
Jolliet, a French-Canadian, a skilled “harpsichordist” a 2-row church organ,
explorer, and eventually, Jolliet was granted the Island of Antwhere by
Louis XIV as a reward.
(3,047.32 sq mi) in size, it is the 90th largest island in the world.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Jolliet
Pip’s notes- I had left the mouse on the link ‘portage’, while I wandered off.
On my screen is a dude carrying a cannoe over his head.
I almost thought it was that horror movie villan with the triangle head.
I also wondered why the town is called Portage,
and carrying a cannoe is called ‘portaged’.
Anyway…
- 1900 – The children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum, is first published in the United States.
The 1st copy is given to the author’s sister.
Baum wrote thirteen additional Oz books which serve as
official sequels to the first story.
and the Library of Congress has declared the work to be
“America’s greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale.”
Pip’s notes- Yep, this dude had his birthday on Monday, and his book released on Wednesday.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wonderful_Wizard_of_Oz
- 1954 – The United States Supreme Court hands down a unanimous decision in
Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, outlawing racial segregation
in public schools.
The Court ruled that “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal”,
therefore laws imposing them violate the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
However, the decision’s 14 pages did not spell out any sort of method for ending
racial segregation in schools, and the Court’s second decision in Brown II
(349 U.S. 294 (1955)) only ordered states to desegregate
“with all deliberate speed”.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_v._Board_of_Education
- 1995 – Shawn Nelson steals an M60 tank from the California
Army National Guard Armory in San Diego and proceeds to go on a rampage.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_San_Diego_tank_rampage
Pip’s notes- hahahahahahaahhahaahahhahaha (breathes) hahahaahahahahaahaah
There is a map of the route taken by this dude, and there’s a
“crash indicator” showing where ‘the chase’ ended. Fucking mint.
Side note- Roughly 5,100 households had “disrupted electricity”.
yeah? no kidding! A tank just took out dozens of utility poles.
Oh, and your 1500 Ram that’s out front? It’s now only 2 1/2 feet tall.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_San_Diego_tank_rampage
- 2006 – The aircraft carrier USS Oriskany is sunk in the Gulf of Mexico
as an artificial reef.
Having earned two battle stars for service in the Korean War,
and ten for service in the Vietnam War.
In 1966, she had one of the worst shipboard fires since World War II, I’d say it’s
worth a look through on the wiki page.

dysentery Deere refused to run for a second term.
He died at home (known as Red Cliff) at the age of 82.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Deere_(inventor)
Pip’s notes- FYI, Jacques Marquette died due to dysentery on May 18, 1675
We might have a familiar name pop up in passings, later in the week.
Edit- no we won’t. I already did this Thurs & Fri history segment.
Holidays –

high blood pressure. “Know Your Numbers”, a goal of blood pressure awareness
around the globe.
