LOTS of History
Prepared by Pip over at Ducktioncups.com If you like the history segment SHOW THEM SOME LOVE Website FB TikTok
July 10th
- 1789 – Alexander Mackenzie reaches the Mackenzie River delta.
The Mackenzie River flows through a vast, thinly populated region of forest and tundra entirely within the
Northwest Territories in Canada, although its many tributaries reach into five other Canadian provinces and territories.
Pip’s notes – Expedition Overland channel had me thinking about Overlanding, years ago.
I still haven’t used that dang Roof top tent I bought a month before the ‘Vid virus. I look at it more as a novelty item now.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackenzie_River
- 1997 – In London, scientists report the findings of the DNA analysis of a Neanderthal skeleton which supports
the “out of Africa theory” of human evolution, placing an “African Eve” at 100,000 to 200,000 years ago.
Pip’s notes – ‘we can’t be wrong! We already have the book deal!’
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_evolution
- 2002 – At a Sotheby’s auction, Peter Paul Rubens’s painting The Massacre of the Innocents is sold for
£49.5 million (US$76.2 million) to Lord Thomson.
pip’s notes – The painting looks like half orgy / half people fumbling over each other,
and a dude about to spike a baby?… uh… ‘art’, I guess?
Pip’s side note – 2002’s USD value of $76,200,000.00 would be $128,818,662.59 in 2023 USD..
Wait.. 128-76= 52… the dollar value from 2002 to 2023 is 52 million dollars?
I mean, money printers go burr and all… but in 20 years?!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massacre_of_the_Innocents_(Rubens)
- 2007 – Erden Eruç begins the first solo human-powered circumnavigation of the world.
” Guinness World Records has officially recognized Eruç for the
“First solo circumnavigation of the globe using human power”
on a journey that lasted 5 years 11 days 12 hours and 22 minutes.”
Pip’s notes – Holy row boat?! dude… went around the world.. in a rowboat?…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erden_Eru%C3%A7
- 2012 – The Episcopal Church USA allows same-sex marriage.
Pip’s notes – (Attempted sarcasm) Those same humans who ‘short change’ that ‘non-cash’ tip,
after the Sunday brunch with family that follows their Church, judge thy Neighbor.. Gotta laugh at it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Episcopal_Church_(United_States)
– Anyway… a quick Goolag – search of “Televangelist net worth”
reports such findings –
– Televangelist Pat Robertson (Net worth estimated at $100 million)
– Joel Osteen (Net worth estimated at $80 million)
– Benny Hinn (Net worth estimated at $60 million)
Umm.. respectfully, this Florida-Dude thinks that the Universe promotes life, and the only
credit-card you’ll need to pay is that of the cost of your Karma. Just a thought.
- 2019 – The last Volkswagen Beetle rolls off the line in Puebla, Mexico.
The last of 5,961 “Special Edition” cars will be exhibited in a museum.
Hey! Punch Buggy Red! No Punch Backs!
Pip’s notes – …. (Puts lighter down)
Yo… within a few generations…. “PUNCH BUGGY!” won’t be known.
I REPEAT – ‘PUNCH BUGGY’ WILL SOON BE FORGOTTEN.
(Pip stares of in distance… all. those. road. trips….)
Pip’s side note – I already have 3 vehicles and no garage.
I do not need another project car id….. YO!!!!
Ok, hear me out- a reverse mounted Hemi that has a Hellcat supercharger that’s reverse mounted into a VW Bug.
Front wheel drive, rear mounted engine VW Bug with 700 Horsie-pewers. Or… an All-wheel-drive Bu…
..Moving on.. Anyway… the Birthdays!
Happy Birthdays
- 1856 – Nikola Tesla, Serbian-American physicist and engineer (d. 1943)
Tesla’s diary contains just one comment on what happened at the end of his employment,
a note he scrawled across the two pages covering 7 December 1884, to 4 January 1885,
saying “Good bye to the Edison Machine Works”.
Pip’s notes – How does one have a small ‘note’ that describes Tesla?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla
- 1891 – Edith Quimby, American medical researcher and physicist (d. 1982)
Her work involved developing diagnostic and therapeutic applications of X-rays.
One of her main concerns was protecting both those handling the radioactive material and
making sure that those being treated were given the lowest dose necessary.
Pip’s notes – Quimby received many awards for her work throughout her career
and participated in several scientific societies.
In 1940, she was the first woman to receive the Janeway Medal from the American Radium Society.
The following year, she was awarded the Gold Medal of the Radiological Society of North America,
for work which “placed every radiologist in her debt.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Quimby
- 1914 – Joe Shuster, Canadian-American illustrator, co-created Superman (d. 1992)
a Canadian-American comic book artist best known for co-creating the DC Comics character Superman,
with Jerry Siegel, in Action Comics #1 (cover-dated June 1938).
Shuster modelled the hero on Douglas Fairbanks Sr., and modelled his bespectacled alter ego,
Clark Kent, on a combination of Harold Lloyd and Shuster himself, with the name
“Clark Kent” derived from movie stars Clark Gable and Kent Taylor.
Lois Lane was modeled on Joanne Carter, a model hired by Shuster.
(She later married co-creator Jerry Siegel in 1948.)
Siegel and Shuster’s origins as children of Jewish immigrants is also thought to have influenced their work.
Pip’s notes – Possible Q.O.T.D. – Which ‘comicstrip superhero or vilian would you be?’
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Shuster
- 1920 – Owen Chamberlain, American physicist and academic, Nobel Prize laureate (d. 2006)
an American physicist who shared with Emilio Segrè the Nobel Prize in
Physics for the discovery of the antiproton, a sub-atomic antiparticle
Pip’s notes – …(exhales) sub-atomic… that’s like really small?…
(Pip holds up index & thumb and looks at Owen’s photo on Wiki) “I squish you head!”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owen_Chamberlain
- 1921 – Eunice Kennedy Shriver, American activist, co-founded the Special Olympics (d. 2009)
In June 1963, Kennedy Shriver started a day camp called Camp Shriver for children with
intellectual and physical disabilities at her home in Potomac, Maryland.
Special Olympics competitions are held every day, all around the world—including local,
national and regional competitions, adding up to more than 100,000 events a year.
Pip’s notes – a sister of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, U.S. Senators Robert F. Kennedy
and Edward Kennedy, Rosemary Kennedy, and U.S. Ambassador to Ireland Jean Kennedy Smith,
sister-in-law of Jacqueline Kennedy as well as the mother-in-law of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
She was married to Sargent Shriver, who was the United States Ambassador to France
and was one of the two Democratic nominees for Vice President of the United States in 1972.

Passings
- 1851 – Louis Daguerre, French photographer and physicist, invented the daguerreotype (b. 1787)
The Daguerreotype was the first publicly available photographic process; it was widely used during the 1840s and 1850s.
“Daguerreotype” also refers to an image created through this process.
Pip’s notes – The written contract drawn up between Nicéphore Niépce and Daguerre includes an undertaking
by Niépce to release details of the process he had invented – the asphalt process or heliography.
Daguerre was sworn to secrecy under penalty of damages and undertook to design a camera and improve the process.
The improved process was eventually named the physautotype.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daguerreotype
- 1954 – Calogero Vizzini, Italian mob boss (b. 1877)
Vizzini was considered to be one of the most influential and legendary Mafia bosses
of Sicily after World War II until his death in 1954.
In the media, he was often depicted as the “boss of bosses” –
although such a position does not exist in the loose structure of Cosa Nostra.
Pip’s notes – Movie idea… Y’all will need to see the “early years” photo of Don Calo’ dress attire.
A young dude being a smartass about said attire, and wind up getting ‘whacked.
Or is it ‘offed?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calogero_Vizzini
- 1989 – Mel Blanc, American voice actor (b. 1908)
he became known worldwide for his work in the Golden Age of American Animation as the
voices of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd
(before and after Arthur Q. Bryan voiced Elmer, and even during Bryan’s lifetime),
Tweety, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, the Tasmanian Devil, and numerous other
characters from the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies theatrical cartoons.
He later voiced characters for Hanna-Barbera’s television cartoons, including Barney Rubble and
Dino on The Flintstones, Mr. Spacely on The Jetsons, Secret Squirrel on The Atom Ant/Secret Squirrel Show,
the title character of Speed Buggy, and Captain Caveman on Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels and The Flintstone Kids
Pip’s notes – It ‘sounds’ like this dude is responsible for most of the cartoons we saw as kids.
Referred to as “The Man of a Thousand Voices”, he is regarded as one of the most influential people in the
voice acting industry, and as one of the greatest voice actors of all time
- 1993 – Sam Rolfe, American screenwriter and producer (b. 1924)
Most of Rolfe’s subsequent career was spent in television, where he created and was part of the writing staff
on the highly regarded western series Have Gun – Will Travel and, most famously, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
When Ian Fleming was unable to continue development of the U.N.C.L.E. concept, producer
Norman Felton approached Rolfe, who was at that time working on The Eleventh Hour.
Rolfe wrote the pilot for U.N.C.L.E. “The Vulcan Affair”, and came up with the U.N.C.L.E. acronym
Pip’s notes – He died of a heart attack in 1993, aged 69, after collapsing while playing tennis.
He was survived by his wife Hilda and two children.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Rolfe
- 2022 – Maurice Boucher, Canadian outlaw biker (b. 1953)
In 2002, Boucher was convicted of ordering the murders of two Quebec prison officers
in an effort to destabilize the Quebec Justice system.
He was sent to serve three life sentences at Canada’s only supermax prison, in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines.
While imprisoned there, Boucher survived several assassination attempts motivated by his infamy,
and was placed in a special unit of the prison to isolate him.
Pip’s notes – On 10 July 2022, La Presse reported that Boucher died while receiving palliative care for throat cancer.
He was 69 years old.
Boucher had two children, Alexandra Mongeau and Francis Boucher, who have also been involved in organized crime.

Holidays and Stuff
- Wyoming has Statehood day
Wyoming is the least populous state despite being the 10th largest by area, with the second-lowest population density after Alaska.
Pip’s notes – What did Delaware? Idaho, Alaska!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_date_of_admission_to_the_Union
- 1973 – The Bahamas celebrates Independence day… from, you guessed it, the UK.
Christopher Columbus was the first European to see the islands, making his first landfall in the “New World” in 1492 when he landed on the island of San Salvador.
Later, the Spanish shipped the native Lucayans to and enslaved them on Hispaniola,
after which the Bahama islands were mostly deserted from 1513 until 1648, nearly all native Bahamians having
been forcibly removed for enslavement or having died of diseases that Europeans brought to the islands.
Pip’s notes – I recall many people bragging about taking a cruise to the Bahamas.
A Florida dude would wager a few Sats that those same ‘Cruiseship Karens’ would boycott something like this,
if it didn’t involve their pleasure cruise destination.
Pip’s side notes – “sail with IronicSphere. We celebrate wiping out the indigenous and making a hotel resort”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bahamas
- Nikola Tesla Day
Tesla’s birthday (or in one case, both the day itself and the week leading up to it) is officially celebrated as a holiday
in various parts of the world. In Serbia, 10 July is celebrated as the National Day of Science.
In Croatia, it is called Nikola Tesla Day.
In Niagara Falls, Canada, it is named as the Day of Nikola Tesla.
In the autonomous province of Vojvodina in Serbia, the local Association of Teachers also officially celebrates
10 July as the Day of Nikola Tesla though in practice, the celebrations last the
seven days (one week) from 4 July to 10 July inclusive.
Pip’s childhood notes being inside the government indoctrination camps –
I don’t recall being taught anything about the Tesla dude inside the ‘camps’.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla_in_popular_culture#Nikola_Tesla_Day
Outside of that, this day has been kinda boring in history.
Ooh! How about “Give a little bit… Give a little bit of Duck to you..” (Bumm..bum… bummm bumm)
maybe not.. anyway, get back to Monday, humans.
Pip with Ducktion Cups recommending you to Duck long & Prosper.
